Set to sign: Donavan Johnson
Texas defensive lineman Donavan Johnson is not a man of many words, but his physical play on the football field speaks loud and clear. As the 6-foot-2, 245-pounder gets ready to sign with Iowa on Wednesday, we caught up with him to talk about his future as a Hawkeye, what the coaches have told him to expect, how close he is to qualifying academically, and much more.
Q: What do you have planned for signing day on Wednesday?
JOHNSON: Our school is going to have an assembly and all of us are going to sign in front of everybody.
Q: How many guys do you have signing this year?
JOHNSON: I think there's five of us.
Q: You'll be signing with Iowa, right?
JOHNSON: Yes sir.
Q: What's it been like since you committed? Has Coach Ferentz and staff been down to visit you this month?
JOHNSON: Yes sir. Coach Ferentz was down here last week and Coach Wilson and Coach Kaczenski have been down to visit also.
Q: What's it like as you get to know the coaches better?
JOHNSON: It's been good. I feel real comfortable around them.
Q: Was it different having the head coach over to your house?
JOHNSON: Yeah. At first, I was kind of nervous, but it was good. He's a great guy.
Q: What were some of the things you guys talked about?
JOHNSON: We talked mostly about the season they had and next year and then academics as well.
JOHNSON: I've been talking about it with my parents and I think I'm going to head up there on June 6.
Q: What are your goals in heading up there early and getting ready for your freshman year?
JOHNSON: Hopefully, depending on how my summer goes, I can be ready to play as a freshman a little bit and then my sophomore year maybe start.
Back in October, Johnson verbally committed to Iowa over scholarship offers from Nebraska, Purdue, Kansas State, Iowa State, UNLV, TCU, UTEP, and several others.
