Hicks presser: 'I want to be on the field'
DETROIT - Michigan State defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi likes the competitive spirit and the swagger with which Detroit Renaissance star Mylan Hicks plays football. With five defensive backs, Narduzzi has high hopes that the Phoenix star and the other defensive backs signed by the Spartans in 2010 will be able to replenish a defensive secondary in need of playmakers.
Hicks, like many of the other four defensive backs signed by MSU in 2010 and their counterparts in the class of 2009 that red-shirted, is good at playing the ball in the air.
"Mylan has an attitude that I love," said Narduzzi. "When he is on the field he doesn't smile, he is nasty, and he carries himself on the field like some of the great ones do. He is all business, he loves to compete, and he is an outstanding student. I noticed right away when we had him in camp that when he is competing against other db's he wants to be better than the rest at everything he does. I am looking forward to see what he does with that competitive edge he has because that will help him at the college level."
Michigan State made Hicks a 2010 recruiting priority at the same time they were recruiting his teammates Chris Norman and Dana Dixon who signed with Michigan State in 2009. At that time, Hicks played running back and he did so with toughness. The Phoenix star brings that physicality to secondary.
"I will go out there and compete all day," Hicks said. "Even if my body says that I am tired, I will go out there and will myself to compete. It is my drive to win. I love the game."
Renaissance assistant coach Antoine Edwards can vouch for the fire that Hicks has for the game.
