Showers one of Michiganís best for 2011
Last week when SpartanMag.com released our pre-season top ten we included Valdez Showers of Madison Heights Madison on the list. At the time, the 6-foot-0, 175-pound did not have any scholarship offers. It did not take long for that to change SpartanMag.com spoke with Showers and got the latest on his recruitment.
Showers had an outstanding junior season for Madison Heights Madison High school. He rushed for over 1500-yards and scored 20 touchdowns on offense and had 42 tackles on defense. His play helped lead Madison to an undefeated regular season and a run all the way to the state semi-finals.
Spartanmag.com asked Showers about what school she is hearing from.
I have been offered by Northwestern and by Toledo he said. I was kind of surprised that my first offer was from a Big ten school, but it was exciting. I am also hearing from Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Purdue."
The Spartans and Wolverines have both been in contact?
"Yes, they have been to my school. I went to Michigan's Junior Day and I was just speaking with a Michigan State Coach the other night, they want me to come up there to visit."
Most who have seen Showers play know that he is an explosive offensive player, but his best position might be on the other side of the ball. His size and his physical style of play may make him a better defensive prospect. We asked Showers about a preference and where teams see him at in college?
"It really doesn't matter to me; I just want to help my team win. Most teams are asking me where I want to play, but I think they see me as a cornerback."
One thing that Showers has is plenty of speed. He will easily be one of the fastest football players in Michigan. Showers provide us with his lasts numbers as far as Ht weight and speed.
'"I am 6-foot-0, 180-pounds. I have run a 4.4 in the forty-yard dash and I have a vertical of 36 inches."
Those numbers will certainly put Showers in elite company. Look for him to be one of the top sprinter sin the state this spring.
SpartanMag.com will continue to follow-up with Showers in the coming weeks. Once he makes it up to East Lansing we will follow-up and get some quotes about where the Spartans stand.
Matt Dorsey's Take:
Showers is a player who we think has a chance to be one of the best cornerback prospects in the Midwest for the class of 2011. He has great hips and his speed allows him to run with just about anyone. The Spartans will need to sign 2 or 3 high-level cornerbacks to the class of 2011 and we expect Showers will get a serious look.
