Smith leads Callaway to another state title
Big time players are the ones that step up and make plays in clutch situations.
Callaway (Miss.) four-star point guard Deville Smith certainly falls into that category after making the game winning shot and steal to clinch the Class 5A Championship for the Chargers in the final moments last weekend.
Smith's floater from just inside the free-throw line with 1.2 seconds left lifted Callaway 34-32 over Provine for their second straight title.
"I love those types of moments," Smith said. "I had a good look. I just love that feeling of making big shots and big plays. There was one second left and I stole the ball on the inbounds. It was special. Everyone thought we couldn't do it again."
Smith finished the game with 11 points trailing his younger brother DeVion Smith, who led the Chargers with 12.
Smith and the Chargers will now defend their Grand Slam title against the other champions from the MHSAA's other five classifications. Callaway faces off with Forest tonight at 8:30 p.m.
"If we play like we did against Provine then we've got a good chance at the overall," Smith said.
The 5-foot-10, 160-pounder is averaging 23.1 points, 3.9 steals and 3.6 assists per game. He earned first team, All-State honors as well as a preseason Dandy Dozen selection by The Clarion Ledger.
