Video: Kearney, Gibson shine at Motown Showdown
ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Detroit Southeastern duo of Brandan Kearney and Percy Gibson played up on the 17-and-under Team Detroit basketball team last spring. The Southeastern stars played well as juniors-to-be, but both players took a backseat to 2010 stars Trey Zeigler and Ray McCallum.
This summer Kearney and Gibson are the franchise players for Team Detroit. Both excelled in their new roles last weekend at and the duo appears primed carry Team Detroit to success in the months ahead.
Kearney, a member of the USA 16-and-under basketball team last summer, is ranked No. 90 in the Class of 2012 by Rivals.com. Gibson is rated the No. 123 player in the class of 2011 by Rivals.com. Both players will put themselves in a position to rise in the rankings if they maintain a high level of play over the course of the spring and summer.
Team Detroit lost in the tournament semifinal where they fell to D3 Heat, which beat a short-handed Michigan Mustangs team 90-88 to claim the Motown Showdown title.
Kearney's ability as a point guard was on display as the 6-foot-5 Michigan State commitment touched the basketball nearly every possession he was on the court.
Kearney had a number of dazzling passes included an assortment of no-look or one-handed assists. The future Spartan also played with sound fundamentals and took care of the basketball without taking too many risks.
