Moncrief takes home MVP award
Raleigh's Donte Moncrief is considered at the top of Mississippi's loaded wide receiver class for 2011.
But the 6-foot-2, 205-pounder had no idea how he would do when he went up against some of the top talent from across the Southeast at the Tuscaloosa Nike Football Training Camp. But at the end of the day Moncrief stood up and accepted a Most Valuable Player Award as the camp's top wideout.
"It shocked me a little bit," Moncrief said. "The top wide receivers in Alabama were there and were doing pretty good also."
Moncrief's performance was also enough to impress Rivals recruiting analyst Barton Simmons, who ranked him as the ninth best player out of the nearly 400 prospects on hand.
"At 6 feet 2, 205 pounds, Moncrief is a big wide receiver but somehow he is able to play even bigger than his listed size," Simmons wrote. "Moncrief has enough speed, and runs good routes but he gets big in the intermediate routes and catches the ball out in front of him with his hands. On more vertical routes, Moncrief catches the ball well and if there is a jump-ball situation he has the vertical to really make the smaller defensive backs pay. Throughout the spring, Moncrief has seen his stock continuously rise and with an MVP day at wide receiver Saturday, that trend continued in Tuscaloosa."
Moncrief impressed his own self at the camp but also saw some areas he can improve on before he begins his senior campaign at Raleigh.
