DT Simmons to visit Chapel Hill
McKeesport, Pennsylvania defensive tackle Delvon Simmons is half of an outstanding line tandem at his high school, along with Branden Jackson, and both prospects will be visiting an Atlantic Coast Conference school later this month.
Simmons, a 6-foot-5, 265-pound tackle, is ranked the No. 39 defensive tackle in the nation and the No. 11 overall prospect in Pennsylvania.
In a down year for Pennsylvania high school football talent, impressive prospects like Simmons and Jackson are in even higher demand than they otherwise would be, and that's saying something. Despite the efforts of college coaches, Simmons hasn't been able to do much in the way of recruiting so far this summer.
"I haven't been able to do anything yet," Simmons said. "I was supposed to go to Rutgers two weeks ago but I couldn't go to that. I've got summer school for some recovery classes. I had already missed one day and they wouldn't let me miss more."
Simmons will be able to be on the road shortly. He, Jackson and McKeesport's high school coach plan on taking a trip south to check out North Carolina and Butch Davis' football program.
"I think that's July 22nd," Simmons noted. "I haven't talked to them (North Carolina) lately but they've been calling my coach all the time."
Simmons said some colleges are recruiting him harder than Jackson, while other colleges are more interested in Jackson. However, there are some schools that are pushing the idea of the two prospects going to college as a packaged deal very hard.
After Simmons visits North Carolina he may have to wait until official visits to check out any other schools.
