Rebel-Net recently had time to sit down and talk recruiting with 2011 shooting guard Norman Powell. The San Diegan likes his hometown school (SDSU), but is intrigued by what the Rebels have to offer.
UNLV coaches were recently spotted watching the Rivals four-star prospect.
"That does have an impact in my recruitment. I'm still open to taking a few more looks at schools and UNLV is one of them,"said Powell. "The staff has a good relationship with my family. My mom and them talk a lot about the school and what they have to offer."
In an earlier article with AztecSportsReport.com , Powell mentioned that he is looking to stay on the west coast. That the Rebels are one of only five west coast schools to garner over 100 wins over the past few seasons sits well with Powell. But when he thinks of UNLV, there is more than that.
"I like the style they play at UNLV. I also like the players on their team and the coaching staff. And I can see myself playing in their gym. And it is Vegas. Vegas is my spot," said Rivals 48th rated player in the 2011 class.
While he admitted that a winning program, location, and education are all factors he's considering, playing time is something that weights heavily into his decision.
"I have to have a good relationship with the coach," Powell said."But playing time is important, too. I want to go right in and make an impact."
When asked which schools have been recruiting him the hardest, aside from UNLV he mentioned UCLA, SDSU, ASU, USC, Oregon, UTEP, and Colorado.
As for his game, there are a few areas he wants to focus on this summer and his senior year.
Powell said, "I'm looking to improve my shot. And even though I take pride in my defense, I want to try and improve upon it too. I'm also going to work on my speed and my ball handling."
