Shinn prepares for new role
With the summer coming to a close, many of the nation's top recruits are putting the recruiting process on hold as they prepare for their upcoming seasons. Alabama commit Marvin Shinn ended his summer camp and visit schedule early to begin training for what could be an unusually challenging senior season.
"I've just been working hard trying to get in shape since I'll be playing both ways this season," Shinn said. "It's going to be a challenge but I'm really looking forward to pushing myself and seeing what I'm capable of. I'll be doing everything I did last year on offense but the coaches are going to work me in at safety this year too. I actually started out there as a freshman so I have some experience playing back there. I love playing defense. It's just a different mindset, but it's just as fun as playing offense in its own way."
Shinn said he has been relatively out of the loop when it comes to recruiting this summer, choosing to focus on his own training rather than the recruiting scene.
"I don't really see many of the other recruits but me and Danny Woodson are pretty tight. We definitely keep in touch. I still keep in touch with Coach (Jeremy) Pruitt as well just to check in and make sure everything is going well."
With a number of their top playmakers returning from a season ago, Shinn's Vigor squad may be one of the favorites to win the state championship in 2010.
"We start our fall camp on August 2 so I'm pretty much done with my summer. I won't be able to check out any schools or visit anywhere until we get a little further into the season. I know I will be taking all my official visits but I'm not sure when and where they will be yet.
Shinn has added some muscle to help with his defensive play this fall and now stands at 6-foot-4, 195 pounds while still maintaining his blazing speed with a 4.47 forty time.
"I'm really comfortable with this team we have. I think we have all the parts we need to make a real run at a state title. We have good leadership, lots of talent and great team chemistry. Everybody is on the same page and I think that's really a key to a championship team."
Shinn is rated the nation's No. 9 wide receiver prospect and is a member of the Rivals250.
