Purdue interested in Berry
Junior college defensive back Destry Berry has generated a lot of interest during this recruiting cycle and the season hasn't even started at Orchard Park (N.Y.) Erie C.C.
The 5-foot-11, 185-pound prospect might be seeing a little time at safety but most of the time this fall he will be lined up at cornerback. That's the position he projects to play in the FBS ranks whenever he signs with a four-year school.
Contact has been limited lately but it will pick back up as soon as tomorrow, when coaches can contact recruits again.
"Everyone's been in camp and we just got out of camp two days ago," Berry said on Tuesday. "I haven't really been talking to any schools lately because we've pretty much just been in camp."
Berry said the same schools that were recruiting him before are still talking to him. Akron has extended a scholarship offer, while Buffalo and Oregon State, among others, are showing interest.
A program from the Big Ten recently started sending out some feelers.
"My coaches have said Purdue's been talking about me," he said. "He's been talking with them about me lately. I"m not even sure what they've said because I haven't talked to them, but that's what my defensive backs coach said.
"They [Purdue] have a nice program. I'd have to actually look more into them but I think that's a pretty good program."
Most of Berry's focus has been centered on preparations for his season at Erie C.C. this fall. He's excited about the caliber of the defensive unit he will be a part of.
He went on to say he has not talked to colleges about setting up any visits for the coming months but he will definitely be taking a trip to Akron, since they have offered him a scholarship.
