Bulldogs find good fortune in Florida
GAINESVILLE, Fla., - Dan Mullen had a premonition about the outcome of Saturday night's game.
The second year Mississippi State head coach was ordering Chinese takeout Wednesday night when his fortune cookie read 'You are heading south to experience much happiness'. The statement held true as Mullen's Bulldogs held on to a 10-7 victory spoiling homecoming for 22nd ranked Florida.
"I've said all week that I've had success in this stadium," Mullen said. "This is not an upset. Our team expected to win this football game."
MSU threw the ball only once in the second half and churned out 212 yards on the ground during the contest to improve to 5-2 overall and 2-2 inside the Southeastern Conference.
"We were able to run the ball so that's what we stuck with," Mullen said. "It worked out. I told our players in these types of ballgames we've got to make plays and in the end we made the plays that we needed to in the end."
The Bulldogs finished the night with 245 yards of offense and no turnovers. State was led on the ground by Vick Ballard who finished with 98 yards on 20 carries.
"I do think Vick ran the ball very hard," Mullen said. "He's a physical runner and we know that's what he is."
Chris Relf totaled 115 yards of offense with 82 yards rushing and a touchdown while completing 4-of-9 passing for 33 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions.
Chad Bumphis was the leading Bulldog receiver with one catch for 30 yards.
