Kalis, Ed's cruise to state finals
After a disappointing 5-5 season in 2009, the entire Lakewood St. Edward team refocused its energy and set its sights on the 2010 Ohio Division I state championship. With a perfect 14-0 record, the Eagles need just one more win to achieve that goal they set shortly during the off-season.
The Eagles play for their first state championship on Saturday at Canton's Fawcett Stadium against Huber Heights Wayne and Ohio State commitment Braxton Miller.
"That will be fun being on the same field with Braxton," said St. Edward junior lineman and future Buckeye Kyle Kalis. "It was the same on Saturday with Kenny and Chris."
To reach the state finals, St. Edward first had to get by Toledo Whitmer and future Buckeye Kenny Hayes and Ohio State recruiting target Christopher Wormley. The Eagles won that game, 23-13.
"It was awesome," Kalis said.
During the game, Kalis had the chance to go head-to-head with Wormley several times. But, Hayes lined up on the opposite side.
"I did pretty good against him," Kalis said of the match-up with Wormley, a defensive end. "It was pretty evenly matched because he was so hard to move."
After the game, Kalis talked briefly with Hayes and Wormley.
"Only for a second," he said. "I didn't want to keep them because they weren't really in a talking mood. I just said good game and talk to you soon."
Kalis said reaching the state championship game is like a dream come true, but there's still work to be done to realize his dream.
"Words can't even describe it," he said. "After the game we were all in tears because we have reached a goal, but now we still have to go out and win it. Our investment has paid off."
Playing the state semifinals Saturday night meant Kalis missed the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry game on television. But, thanks to technology, he was able to keep up with the Buckeyes 37-7 win.
"I got updates on my phone because we were getting ready for the game but I only saw the highlights," he said.
Kalis said he expects Ohio State coaches Taver Johnson and Jim Bollman to visit St. Edward in the next couple of weeks.
