Gaulden approaching the finish
Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) University School cornerback Devin Gaulden has been making the rounds in recent weeks with visits to Boston College, Texas Tech, and Wisconsin. The 2011 prospect has one more visit scheduled and will then be looking to bring his recruitment to a final conclusion.
"I've definitely been hearing from Texas Tech a lot. They're on me really hard right now," Gaulden said. "Also Boston College and Wisconsin are still after me. I'm hearing from Wake Forest as well, and I'll be visiting them this coming weekend."
"I should be done with visits after this one, and I think I'll have a good idea of where I want to go once I get the trips taken care of," he said. "I think I'm going to be ready to make a decision on where I'm headed around the middle of December. It may be sooner, but that's what I'm shooting for right now."
From a Texas Tech standpoint, assistant coach Travaris Robinson has been able to find a lot of common ground with the fellow Florida product.
"Coach Robinson is a really good dude. He and I have a lot in common with him being from south Florida. He's a young coach and it's cool to be able to relate to a guy like that," he said. "We talk a lot about everything in my life, which is a lot of stuff that's going on outside of football. He's told me he's got a lot of ideas for me out there. Ways he could use me in their secondary and stuff. We've built a great relationship so far."
Physicality and aggression has been a big part of the 5-foot-10, 175-pounder's game to this point, and he's hoping to find a place where that style will be welcomed addition.
"I'm looking for a program that plays the same style of aggressive defense that I love to play. That's the way I am on the field and I don't want to have to hold back in that way. I want to be in a system that will allow me to play with that aggression that I have. I'm a very physical corner on the line of scrimmage and I want to be able to still do some of those kinds of things on the next level. That's a big factor for me."
"I want a great relationship with the coaching staff. I'd like those guys to be about more than just football. It needs to be a real family kind of environment."
Like most, Gaulden is hoping to have an opportunity to contribute early, but he understands the uphill climb to accomplish such a feat.
"I definitely want to have the chance to come in and play right away, but most of that is depending on how I do in camps so we'll see. I know it will be a really tough thing to make happen," he said. "It's not a must because I know it's hard to contribute right away, but I'm definitely checking depth charts and stuff like that."
Aside from Texas Tech, Gaulden also holds offers from Auburn, Boston College, Cincinnati, Duke, Marshall, Wake Forest, West Virginia, and Wisconsin among others.
