Dickson approaching decision
Griffin (GA) weakside defensive end prospect Xzavier Dickson is set to announce his college decision and has three finalists, according to his coach, Steve Devoursney.
"It's between Auburn, Georgia, and Alabama," said Devoursney. "He's going to announce his decision at the Under Armour game on January 5. Alabama was the first school to offer him. They had him in for camp as a sophomore and have been recruiting him ever since. Nick Saban has been to the school three times. I think Xzavier likes him a lot. With Georgia, I think Mark Richt has been by the school three times to see him with Coach Grantham. I think he really likes the players that are coming in from Georgia with this freshman class. With Auburn they're hot here lately, and he likes that aspect of it, too."
Devoursney views Dickson as a potential early contributor who could succeed in multiple defensive systems at the college level.
"He's a big athlete that has a lot of potential to be a heck of a defensive player," Devoursney said. "He has a chance to play early on special teams and defense. He should be a very productive player. With the 3-4, they're going to put him at outside linebacker and drop him back at the Jack or Sam linebacker spot. He should be fine with that. With the 4-3, he'd be a defensive end with his hand down, which he's very good at, so I'd say he could do well with either system."
Dickson's versatility and playmaking ability proved to be instrumental in Griffin's success over the past three seasons. Dickson also starred as a tight end and on special teams. He even threw a pass or two for the Bears.
"We were 10-2 and got beat in the 2nd round. He had a lot to do with the 10 wins. We've had 10 wins each of the last three years and he started as a sophomore. We went to the final four twice and the second round this year. In the last game, we were getting beat 34-7 and we came back and lost 34-28. He had a heck of a game on offense and defense and played a big role in the comeback.
"He has a strong arm-he can throw it 70 yards in the air. We ran a trick play with him in one game this season and he hit it for about an 85 yard touchdown pass and the ball probably went 65 yards in the air. He's just a heck of an athlete-great arm, great hands. He can do everything."
Dickson is rated as the third best weakside defensive in the country and tenth best overall prospect in the state of Georgia by Rivals.com.
