Memphis speedster planning early decision
Jaylen Walton has one school on top, two more very much on his mind and a growing list of offers.
The 5-foot-8, 164-pound all-purpose back from Memphis (Ridgeway), Tenn., also has plans to make a decision before the start of his senior season.
"It's going good," Walton said Tuesday night. "Everything's coming along pretty good right now."
Ole Miss, Auburn, Cincinnati, Arkansas and Mississippi State have all offered, and Walton expects to pick up an offer from Vanderbilt soon. He's been to Ole Miss, Memphis and Mississippi State for junior days and will check out a similar function at Vanderbilt this weekend.
One school, Ole Miss, has a slight lead over Cincinnati and Vanderbilt.
They are a school that started recruiting me when I was in the 10th grade," Walton said. "Ole Miss is telling me I can be the next Dexter McCluster. I hear that a lot. They have been able to use small guys well.
"Mississippi State, I like the environment. I like Cincinnati's offensive system."
Walton said he plans to camp at LSU, Alabama and Cincinnati, among others, this summer. Shortly thereafter, he's hoping to give his college of choice a verbal commitment.
"That's my plan," Walton said. "That's what I want to do, but I'll have to see. I still want to take my visits, but I do plan on committing before the season starts."
In the meantime, Walton is working hard to improve his game and make himself more college-ready.
"I think my timing is good," Walton said. "I have good ball skills. I'd like to improve on my vision more. It's good, but I can work on it. I'd like to put on a few pounds. That's the No. 1 thing right now. I'd like to get a little bigger."
