Texas QB visits UA on first day of practice
The University of Alabama welcomed its first visitor of spring practice on Monday when Texas quarterback Preston Dewey arrived in Tuscaloosa and spent the day on campus.
"I toured around the campus, which was really pretty," Dewey said. "I got to see the business school, which is what I want to do. I want to major in business, and the business school is unbelievable here.
"I toured around the stadium, which I've been to before. I went to the Alabama Auburn game last fall. It's hands-down one of the best stadiums in the country, and that would be a pretty awesome place to play. Playing in front of 100,000 people every week wouldn't be too bad of a deal."
UA was the fourth stop for Dewey and his family in the last week. He has also visited the campuses of Clemson, North Carolina and South Carolina on his college tour of the Southeast.
With spring practice starting back Monday, 6-foot-2 quarterback from Austin, Texas, got a chance to see the Crimson Tide players back on the field for the first time since the Capital One Bowl and was impressed with tempo.
"They run an incredibly up-tempo practice, and they get a lot of work done," Dewey said. "There's not a lot of standing around going on. The quarterbacks are always getting reps, getting better, which is always good. Going against that kind of defense everyday will definitely make you a better a quarterback."
Before practice, Dewey got a chance to meet with head coach Nick Saban and offensive coordinator Jim McElwain to see where he stood with Alabama. McElwain is Dewey's main recruiter.
"I sat down with Coach McElwain and talked about where I stood with them," Dewey said. "He told me they're going to take two guys this year. They've obviously offered a lot of people. I think they've offered about six guys, but they said I'm right behind them on their board.
"Coach Saban kind of reiterated what Coach McElwain said. He told me they like me a lot, and if they like what they see this spring and in camp season, they'll have an offer for me."
At this point, Dewey's only offer is from Southern Miss, but he's beginning to receive a lot of interest from other major programs. He plans to visit Arizona, Arizona State and LSU next week and West Virginia later this month.
Before last season, Dewey transferred to St. Andrews Episcopal School where he played under former Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer. Since his transfer, he's seen his recruitment begin to take off.
After his trip to Tuscaloosa, Dewey considers Alabama to be among his top schools as long as he receives an offer.
"It was a great visit overall," he said. "I had a lot of fun, and it definitely increased my interest in Alabama."
