Alford talks recruiting
Decision time appears to be drawing near for Greenville (SC) Wade Hampton offensive tackle Brenden Alford.
"I've been looking at them [Wake Forest] for a long time," Alford said. "I'm thinking about committing soon [probably toward the end of the summer]. I've been thinking about Wake Forest for a while. It's been my only offer [for] a little while."
Alford and his mother attended Wake Forest's Junior Day Saturday, Feb. 25 and left impressed with the University's academics, tutoring program and redshirt formula. The Demon Deacons will have the opportunity to make another strong pitch to Alford when he comes to camp in Winston-Salem next month.
The Palmetto State product, who plans to major in computer science and minor in business, hopes to tour the campus and meet with members of the academic community, when he attends Wake's football camp.
Lonnie Galloway and Jonathan Himebauch are recruiting Alford for the Demon Deacons.
Alford said he and Himebauch are developing a good relationship.
Clemson, Georgia Tech, NC State, South Carolina and Virginia Tech have also shown interest in Alford.
He also plans to camp at NC State and South Carolina this summer, and is thinking about going to a few others.
If another school is to challenge the Deacs in their pursuit of the Upstate behemoth Alford said it must have a similar combination of strong academics and athletics to that of Wake's.
The 6-foot-5, 320-pounder is working to lose weight and improve his conditioning. His goal is to get down to 300 pounds.
Last December he transferred to Wade Hampton after helping Dillon (SC) advance to the fourth round of the state playoffs and a 12-1 finish.
