Receivers show out on Friday
Mississippi State spent its second straight practice indoors due to soggy field conditions at South Farm but it did not stop the Bulldogs wide receivers from having a strong showing.
According to head coach Dan Mullen the veteran wideout corps were the standout group from the first of two practices scheduled on Friday.
"It was a good day today," Mullen said. "We went indoors with all the rain yesterday. I thought the receivers had a good day. That's probably going to be a product of being indoors without the heat fatigue on their legs. I thought they were catching the ball well. The other part is you have a good group with a bunch of seniors like we have at the receiver position."
MSU sports four senior wide receivers in Chad Bumphis, Brandon Heavens, Chris Smith and Arceto Clark. From that group Mullen has been impressed with Smith's showings during preseason camp the most.
"The guys that's really picked up is Chris Smith," Mullen said. "I see that in his approach. I think he sees that this is it. Bumphis is steady and has been since day one but with Chris Smith being a senior it really sunk into him. He's got that desperateness to him that he's trying to go out there and finish his career the best way possible."
Throughout the early fall the Bulldogs have mixed and matched their personnel on the offensive line. The linemen have been shuffled in and out so the different units will be used to working alongside one another in case that situation arises on Saturdays.
