It was long time coming for Davarez Bryant.
So when assistant head coach Rick Trickett finally told Bryant he had a committable offer in February, the New Smyrna Beach native pulled the trigger almost instantly.
"He took me through a long process," Bryant said. "I really thought they weren't going to offer me at first."
Bryant, who didn't play football until this year after playing basketball his whole life, said the whole process was a little surreal.
He relied mostly on instincts and athleticism during his only year of football, so for him to be at dinner with head coach Jimbo Fisher and some players in Tallahassee, it seemed like something out of a dream.
"Just getting a chance to play for Coach Fisher, that's amazing," Bryant said. "I've seen him on TV growing up, then actually having dinner with him in February. I was like 'Man this is not going on right now.' I'm sitting by Karlos Williams and I'm thinking this 'Cant' be happening right now.'"
Slated to arrive on June 15 with the rest of the class, Bryant said his main focus is school right now. As far as training he said he's doing a lot of running, but doesn't anticipate being able to put on weight until he gets on FSU's nutrition plan.
He said the coaching staff doesn't want him to add a ton of weight to his 6-foot-4, 250-pound frame.
"I talk to coach Sal (Sunseri) a lot and he just tells me they're not looking to put on too much weight because they want to keep my speed," he said. "But they want me around a good solid 265."
Bryant didn't get a chance to make a trip to Tallahassee during the spring, but said he is excited about the possibility of dropping into coverage some during college as part of FSU's new defensive scheme.
"I think I could play corner if I wanted to," Bryant joked. "I'm going (to the house if I get a pick). I'm pointing at the fans after that."
