AUBURN | The bad injury news for Auburn's defense just won't stop.
Cornerback Jonathan Jones, who was expected to be the first reserve off the bench this fall, suffered a broken ankle Sunday night and is out indefinitely. The injury occurred away from the football complex when the sophomore slipped on a wet surface.
He joins defensive linemen Dee Ford, Nosa Eguae, Ken Carter, Tyler Nero and star safety Justin Garrett as defensive contributors who have missed significant practice time during fall camp. Defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson, already tasked with rebuilding a defense that allowed 420 yards per game last season, now finds himself shorthanded with less than two weeks before the season opener.
How's that for degree of difficulty?
"The injury bug, that's just part of football. It comes along with the nature of football," Johnson said. "It's a game of collisions and we've had some unfortunate situations. It's real and it's something that's going to affect our ability of how well we play. Somebody is going to have to step up. Somebody else is going to get a chance -- and they're going to have to answer the bell."
