Defense dominates offense in Scrimmage #2
Oregon State's second spring scrimmage followed a trend seen in recent years at Reser Stadium. Once again, the defense was way ahead of the offense. OSU head coach Mike Riley, however, didn't seem that concerned.
"There was some give-and-take today," Riley said. "There were some good runs, some great hits and there weren't too many penalties. It was overall pretty good."
Maybe, except for the fact that OSU's quarterbacks struggled to complete passes against an aggressive Beaver secondary. Consider their numbers on Saturday.
Matt Moore completed 8-of 19 passes for 87 yards and failed to throw a touchdown pass.
Sean Canfield threw the lone touchdown pass of the day — a two-yard strike to tight end Jason Vandiver. Other than that, it was a forgettable day for Canfield
He completed only four passes in thirteen tries and had a pass picked off and returned 40 yards for a touchdown by safety Bryan Payton. Payton had several pass deflections early in the scrimmage and appears to finally be living up to his potential.
