Szakacsy: The underdog

Samson Szakacsy may tongue-tie USC football fans with his last name, but Trojans can rejoice knowing that when Pete Carroll offered the 6-foot-5, 195-pound quarterback a scholarship, he accepted without hesitation.


For Szakacsy, becoming a Trojan was a dream, and Wednesday night was the first time that dream shed the shell of imagination.


"Coach (Steve) Sarkisian, who I have a really good relationship with, sent me a text message that said to call him," explained Szakacsy. "When I did, he told me to call Pete Carroll around 9 p.m. I waited and gave coach Carroll a call. He said that he was offering me a scholarship because he wanted me to be a Trojan.


"I told him that I had USC in my blood ever since I was a little kid; ever since I was at their camp as an eighth grader. I love everything about USC and that this was a dream come true. I told him that I would love to be a Trojan."
