Smith takes the long way to NC State
Gavin Smith originally was the first player to commit to NC State from the Class of 2006. In fact, he committed before his junior season even started, and he was the first recruit picked up by then-new defensive line coach Todd Stroud. But Smith would be the first admit he did not see the day where he would be wearing red and white coming.
"Ever since I de-committed last January I never though I would play for NC State," Smith told The Wolfpacker.
Smith, a 6-foot-4, 270-pounder from Wakefield High in Raleigh, decided to back out of his verbal after taking an official visit to South Carolina. He then selected Virginia and signed with the Cavaliers. He was rated as a three-star prospect by Rivals.com, the No. 13 player in North Carolina and No. 43 defensive tackle nationally.
"I was at Virginia for two weeks and didn't like it," Smith said. "I knew then I wanted to be at NC State."
