Practice Report: Day Two
The Oklahoma Sooners were greeted by hot temperatures on Friday as they took to the Rugby Fields for their second day of practices. The Sooners went through their second consecutive workout in shorts and helmets as NCAA rules don't allow for teams to go directly to full pad practices.
The Sooners will practice tomorrow and Monday in shoulder pads and helmets, or 'uppers', as Bob Stoops calls it, before donning full pads during their fifth practice.
On Friday, the Sooners went further into their systems as they worked with their field goal and punt teams during the day.
The Sooners are trying several players out as punt returners even though Reggie Smith is expected to handle those duties in 2006. The Sooners worked Smith, Demarco Murray, Dominique Franks and Manuel Johnson as punt returners.
They were field punts from Garrett Hartley, Mike Knall and newcomer Michael Cohen.
Cohen has several very impressive punts on the day and he appears ready to make a run at the starting punter's job.
"Michael Cohen did pretty well just looking at their time. Knall was better, but Cohen averaged about 42 yards and Hartley averaged 40 yards. It was the second day and working with those snappers wasn't too bad and you've got to get it polished up," said Stoops following practice.
Eric Mensik and walk-on Derek Shaw served as the deep snappers on the day and both players did a good job on the day. But there has been a mystery man waiting in the wings. He'll see his first action as a deep snapper tomorrow.
"The snaps and the holds were all good," said Stoops. "For the second day, those guys are doing good. I just found out that Brandon Crow is really good at it. He was over there hiding and we're going to bust him out tomorrow."
