Defense shines again in Pitt win over Cincy
CINCINNATI - The Pitt football team played in Cincinnati Friday night, hoping to stop their six-game away-from-home losing streak and to better their 2005 winless-on-national-TV mark. They accomplished both at Nippert Stadium on Friday night, and in the process the Panthers furthered the notion that their 2006 defense may well be a dominating force, propelling the team to its eventual 33-15 victory.
Despite some late-game heroics from Cincinnati, including a fourth-down measurement inside the Pitt 10-yard line with the Bearcats down by 11, the Panthers put together 50-plus minutes of tough defense: through three quarters, Cincinnati generated just 139 yards of offense.
"Our defense played outstanding," Pitt head coach Dave Wannstedt said after the game. "Anytime you can get a conference win on the road, it's very important, obviously."
