Former Gopher RB commitment will visit MSU
One of the players that SpartanMag.com has been following throughout this fall is Andre Anderson of Barrington High School in Illinois. The 5-foot-8, 186-pound running back is now exploring his options due to the coaching change at the University of Minnesota. We spoke with Anderson last night about his recruitment and future plans.
"I just talked with Michigan State earlier tonight. I talked with the running backs coach (Dan Enos) I am going up there for a visit on January 12th. I am looking forward to it."
Coach Mark Dantonio offered Anderson right after he was hired at Michigan State and now teh Spartans will have the opportunity to host him on an official visit.
Anderson indicated that the official visit to Michigan State would have likely happened even if the Golden Gophers had not fired Head Coach Glen Mason.
"I had always planned on taking a visit to Michigan State. I wanted to keep my options open and having something to comapre. You never know what is going to happen."
As far as the situation at the University of Minnesota Anderson had the following to say:
"It was a shock. I was really surprised. My dad spoke with Coach Peterson earlier today and he said they are just waiting to see what happens. I will give them a call tomorrow."
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his recruitment at this point, Anderson seemed very calm about the recruiting process.
"I am going to take my visit and see how things go," he said. "I am sure everything will work out. Iowa State also wants me to come out there and Northern Illinois has called as well."
SpartanMag.com has long been high on Anderson since we first saw film of him in action, and that was his junior film.
In our opinion Anderosn's two star ranking does not do him justice. We would not be surpised if he moves up the rankings when they are udated later this month. Our opinion is shared by one of the top recruitng analsy in the midwest, EdgyTim.
We spoke with Illinois high school recruiting analyst EdgyTim of EdgyTim.com about Anderson last night and he had the following to say about Anderson.
"Andre Anderson is one of the most underrated players in Illinois if not the Midwest. He is a game-breaker. I have seen him play probably half a dozen times and every time he impresses me. He has great speed and vision, and he is very athletic.
He is a track guy who doesn't play football like a track guy. He has the speed to take it to the outside and is tough enough to run between the tackles. Somebody is going to get a very good player."
At 5-foot-8, 186-pounds some view Anderson as a scat-back, however he is not a guy who likes to dance around and avoid contact.
Anderson bench presses close to 350-pounds. When you combine that with his 4.4 Forty-yard dash (4.37 at Iowa State Camp), you have a player who can break tackles and dish out some punishemnt as well.
With the Spartans only having 3 running backs on scholarship, it is imperative that they take two running backs this year. The Spartans picked up a commitment from 225-pound Ashton Leggett last weekend. It is obvious that they ant a speed back to go along with him. As of right now Anderson is the top player on the board for that role.
SpartanMag.com will be sure to speak with Anderson when he return from East Lansing and get his comments on Michigan State University.
