Bates takes flight
"It's just talk, it's not happening."
That was how Omaha (Neb.) North quarterback Phillip Bates addressed an inquiry about the possibility that the University of Miami was picking up interest in him and vice versa. While it was somewhat contradictory to his comments in a Jan. 9 article on CaneSport.com, it reinforces what he has said for most part since Iowa State made its head coaching change in November.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Bates has been committed to Iowa State since last spring and only because of the transition in coaching staffs would the degree of his commitment to the Cyclones be in question. He has taken an official visit to Ohio and has fielded interest from a number of other schools since the resignation of Dan McCarney, maintaining that he was still committed to ISU and still likely to sign. But he also said he would explore other options and he has.
