Opportunity everywhere for Jones
It is not often that a redshirt freshman who is second on the depth chart garners a lot of offseason attention, but defensive back Reshad Jones could end up as a starter at both the free safety or the cornerback spot when the 2007 season begins. Jones who played both corner and safety in high school was the number one rated safety in the country by Rivals.com coming out of Washington High School in Atlanta, Georgia in 2006, but Georgia's depth at safety kept him off the playing field for his true freshman season.
With two starters gone (Tra Battle and Oliver) Jones will see the field somewhere next season. Asher Allen, Thomas Flowers, Donovan Baldwin, or Prince Miller could end up as the starter at corner to replace Oliver, so right now, Jones' best option for starting job is the free safety position that C.J. Byrd currently occupies. Byrd and Jones pushed each other all spring to the delight of defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Willie Martinez.
