Young players get a chance to show off
The Texas Longhorns went through their first full scrimmage of pre-season camp on Wednesday morning at DKR Texas-Memorial Stadium and the coaching staff used the opportunity as chance to see where many of their young players are at with the season nearly two weeks away.
"There were certain guys that we took out of the scrimmage early and we elevated up to see how they would do with different combinations of linemen and different combinations of backs. It's truly an evaluation time," offensive coordinator Greg Davis said.
With several prominent starters limited to only a handful of snaps, redshirt freshman running back Vondrell McGee proved to be the day's top playmaker as he displayed great vision, quickness and big-play ability on several runs.
While McGee was the day's showstopper, freshman quarterbacks John Chiles and G.J. Kinne struggled in their first extensive scrimmage work.
Even with Sherrod Harris out for at least several weeks with a knee sprain, Davis sees no reason to panic at this point.
