Tailback Notebook: Competition Combo
The half-way point of fall camp has whittled the running back battle down to seven players.
C.J. Gable, the incumbent starter from the 2006 season, gave some insight on the scrimmage's purpose. If you read between the lines, you may get an idea of how the battle will shake out.
"We're trying to figure out who can catch and who can't, who can power the ball when we need it," Gable said after Thursday night's scrimmage. "That's what we're doing right now, so that's what the scrimmage is for, so the coaches can figure this out."
Based on play calling and reps from the scrimmage, combined with Gable's comments it's safe to say that there will be a feature back, his replacement, a third-down back, a back who is most apt at pass protection and possibly a short-yardage power-back.
