Teammates, roommates, best friends share moment
MADISON, Wis.-Though the play won't define their respective careers at the University of Wisconsin, a fake punt against top-ranked Ohio State where Ken DeBauche completed a 31-yard pass to his backup, Paul Standring, was an irreplaceable moment the two seniors shared together on one of the biggest stages in college football.
"On Tuesday, Coach B. (Bret Bielema was talking to Kenny and he said, 'we have that same fake that we had in the Purdue game, who's going to go in there and catch it for us?' " Standring said. "Luckily, Kenny mentioned my name and they had the confidence in me to do it.
"It was great because Steve (Johnson) snapped it, Ken threw it and I caught it."
Johnson, DeBauche and Standring, all fifth-year seniors, have been roommates, along with Ben Strickland, for the past three years.
DeBauche, a former quarterback at Bay Port High School, rolled right and looked back along the left sideline, lofting a perfectly placed ball to Standring who landed out of bounds on the Buckeye 22-yard line.
