McGee, Lane talk Sherman
It's been three weeks since Mike Sherman has been named the new head coach at Texas A&M, replacing the departed Dennis Franchione. The Aggies, however, are being coached by interim head coach Gary Darnell the coaching staff left over from Franchione.
Sherman is finishing his obligation as the offensive coordinator of the Houston Texans in the National Football League. Even with those duties, however, Sherman has been able to meet his future team twice on trips to College Station.
"We've had two team meetings and have gotten to talk to him, and that's been really good. He's kind of burning the candle on both ends right now because he has a lot to do," said A&M junior quarterback Stephen McGee. "He's trying to hire a staff here, he's trying to recruit and keep recruits and then he's trying to win games on Sunday and get his offense game planned up throughout the week. As you can imagine he's got his hands full right now. Even considering all that's going on he's still made the time to meet us as players and try to get to know us."
Sherman has been very busy. That's no secret, but he's made good impressions on his future players. Junior running back Jorvorskie Lane smiles broadly when asked how he liked Sherman after meeting him.
"We talked after they announced it, and we talked a little bit (since then)," Lane said "I liked him."
The initial contact between Lane and Sherman were good enough that Lane has put his plans on entering the NFL Draft on hold. Lane had previously said that he wouldn't enter the draft a season early, but after Franchione's resignation rumors began to fly that Lane was having serious thoughts about declaring for the NFL Draft this season.
