Maryland lures away K-State's Franklin
Kansas State offensive coordinator James Franklin is departing to return to Maryland, where he will serve as the offensive coordinator and potentially become the successor to Coach Ralph Friedgen at the school. After initially denying rumors of his possible departure earlier this week, Franklin will accept a final offer that a source near the situation said is equivalent to "head coach money."
K-State athletics director Tim Weiser and Coach Ron Prince had fended off an earlier Maryland offer and overtures from Texas A&M. New Aggies coach Mike Sherman, for whom Franklin worked one year at the Green Bay Packers, is still seeking an offensive coordinator. Weiser and Prince had offered Franklin a substantial raise to stay in Manhattan, but the final offer from Maryland was too good for Franklin to pass up, the source said.
