Razorback commit firms up Ole Miss visit
Dave Childers
RebelGrove.com New Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt has been in contact with several prospects on the Arkansas commitment list and another prospect in line for a visit this weekend is San Antonio (Madison HS) running back Devin Thomas.
Thomas was selected for the US Army All-American all-star game, played this past weekend in San Antonio, but was unable to play due to an injury but still participated in the week long events.
"It was fantastic, a great time," Thomas said Sunday evening. "It was a great honor to be selected, although I couldn't play, so I was just concentrating on having as much fun as I could."
Thomas' selection was certainly warranted.
In just six games before he was injured, he rushed for 1,477 yards on just 128 carries for a 11.1 rushing yard average per carry, and had 17 touchdowns.
"It gets better," Thomas said. "I only played two full games. The other four games, I didn't play in the second half."
Thomas committed to Arkansas late last July and still considers himself a soft Arkansas commitment.
"I love everything about Arkansas," he said. "A key factor (in whether he signs with Arkansas) is how I feel about the whole staff. I know two of the coaches on the staff, but I don't know the rest. I'll visit and a key will be how I feel about the rest of the staff.
After his visit this coming weekend to Oxford, Thomas will spend the following weekend in Fayetteville.
"I don't know much about Ole Miss and I'm just beginning to do some research," Thomas said. "I want to the the facilities and academic support system at Ole Miss. I know the coaches, particularly coach Nutt and coach (Chris) Vaughn and I'm very comfortable with the coaches.
"I know that Ole Miss lost a lot of close games over the last couple of years."
While Thomas is currently focusing on Ole Miss and Arkansas, he said he'll also look at some other schools.
"I'm also looking at Arizona State, TCU, Kansas, and Missouri has come on recently," he said. "I know I'm taking visits to Ole Miss and Arkansas and then I'll decide which other schools I want to visit."
Arizona State is yet to contact Thomas directly at this point, but he said he has some interest in the Sun Devils because a close friend is committed there.
Thomas said that distance probably won't be a factor.
"It's a 10-hour drive to Arkansas and probably about 12-hours to Ole Miss," he said. "What's a couple of more hours?"
Thomas projects to be a full qualifier with a 3.6 GPA and he said he's already made a qualifying score on the SAT.
