Gates will know his status soon

Dating back to his high school career at Marian Catholic in San Diego, P.T. Gates has been trying to gain eligibility to play football at the Division-1 level.

He will know soon whether or not he will be able to enroll at the University of Colorado for the spring semester.

Gates took three courses at Saddleback College this fall.

"I'm just waiting for my paperwork to go through before I leave to go to Colorado," he told Rivals.com on Sunday afternoon. "I am hoping I will find out [my status] this week because school starts [at Colorado] on the 14th [of January]."

Does Gates feel confident that he will be a Buff this spring?

"I am more than confident," he expressed. "I know I did good (academically) but if it did not happen the way it was supposed to, I will probably go to Southern Oregon or Idaho State or something."

Gates is hopeful that he will be able to head out to Colorado later this week. He would room with former Saddleback teammate Nick Nelson.

The top ranked JC running back in the country last year, Gates was named the Mission Football Conference National Division Offensive Player of the Year. He accounted for 1,344 yards of offense and 19 touchdowns in 10 games. He averaged over 15 yards per carry as a senior in high school.

Gates signed with San Diego State out of high school in 2004. He failed to qualify academically and enrolled at Saddleback College in the fall of 2005.

Gates has two years of eligibility remaining.
