New Trojan Nose?
The race to replace All-American Sedrick Ellis is one of the top storylines for the Trojans this spring. At least it was until heir apparent Averell Spicer was sidelined with a lingering knee injury.
Now a youth movement is on at nose guard with several players vying for practice repetitions.
Spicer had the best chance to step in and fill the void left by Ellis, but a bone bruise in his left knee will keep him out of spring ball completely. After practice Pete Carroll said that Spicer might even require arthroscopic surgery.
In the meantime, Derek Simmons and Christian Tupou were called in to man the middle of the defensive line.
"Now that Averell Spicer is down, we really have to develop the nose guard, whether it is Christian Tupou or Derek Simmons," defensive coordinator Nick Holt said after practice."Now we really have to work on that and make sure those two guys are ready to play."
