Signee update: Smelley chases baseball crown
Rivals.com Position Ranking: 30th-ranked pro-style quarterback.
High school: Tuscaloosa American Christian Academy.
Commitment Date: 5/6/2007.
Recruited By: Joe Pendry.
Present size: 6-foot-3, 220 pounds.
On what he is doing to stay in shape: "Right now we [ACA] are in the third round of baseball playoffs, so I'm working out pretty hard three days a week - Monday, Wednesday and Friday - running and conditioning in between workouts for baseball."
On his baseball season and ACA's chances in the state playoffs: "I play shortstop. ... I'm hitting a little over .500 with 12 home runs, so I'm playing pretty good, and the whole team is doing a good job. We've got Houston Academy this weekend, then we'll have one more weekend, and if we win, we'll get to play for another state title [ACA has won three titles over the last four years]."
On the value of having an older brother [Chris Smelley of South Carolina] who plays quarterback in the Southeastern Conference: "He was a senior [at ACA] when I was a sophomore. ... He gives me a lot of advice and I talk to him about a lot of stuff. He sets a good example for me about being confident but also keeping a level head. He tells me you can't get down on yourself - you've got to stay confident and whatever happens, you just keep playing as hard as you can."
On his future position at Alabama: I'm definitely going in [this fall] as a quarterback. I'll compete there and just see where it leads to, and learn the offense which will help me even if I don't end up playing quarterback. I'm going into the summer full ahead working out as a quarterback. ... I've grown to love it. I've just played it for two years, but I had a lot of fun playing it and I got a lot better reading defenses and got more accurate. ... But it doesn't really matter because I just want to be on the field. If it doesn't work out, I'm looking at probably an H-back or tight end role, just catching passes and making plays."
Gbetter reading defenses and got a lot more accurate. I just want to be on the field. Looking at probably H-back/ tight end role. That's the main second spot, just catching passes and making plays. Always played WR, and back then I was a little bit smaller. In our spread offense, so I played that, my 9th grade and 10th grade year. He was a senior when I was a sophomore.
When do you report? Summer school? Going to first session, June 4th or 5th.
Jersey number? Coach pendry told me in the teens, I talk to him every week. I don't really care. I want to have 9, but NS has that covered up, but any number is fine with me.
One thing people don't know about you? My fave thing to do is go duck hunting. Me and my brother got into it a couple years back and during the winter whenever he's off, duck hunting - my biggest. Chris is the one. Something about it - being out there in the swamp and being up close and calling them in and working them - something you've got to do to realize how much fun it is.
Self-description of style
Level headed player, don't get up, don't get down on myself. And aggressive, just want to make plays all the time.
Study plans - Going into business, probably do some financing, my dad is a bizman so I'll kind of folo in his footsteps.
