ASU offers local JUCO corner
Arizona State head football coach Dennis Erickson is no stranger to recruiting junior college talent and the class of 2009 for the Sun Devils may include a few such prospects. ASU recently offered a corner from an in-state school who says he likes what he sees from the Sun Devil defense.
Yuma (Ariz.) Arizona Western College corner Marcus Benjamin has the size and speed that DI scouts are looking for and recently picked up offers from Arizona, Arizona State and Wyoming.
"I got offers from Arizona, ASU and Wyoming," Benjamin said. "Arizona and ASU came in last week and Wyoming two weeks ago."
Benjamin is 6-foot-1, 200 pounds and runs the 40-yard dash around 4.5 seconds. He finished with 28 tackles, one sack and two interceptions in 2007 and returned one of the interceptions for a touchdown.
Benjamin says he would like to stay local so the two Pac 10 offers have some weight.
"I feel great," Benjamin said. "I wanted to stay in Arizona to play and both programs have great defensive backs."
Benjamin graduated from New Iberia (La.) Westgate High School in 2006 and redshirted his first season at Arizona Western. He is on track to transfer to a program of his choice with two years remaining eligibility.
Benjamin says both local schools feel he can come in and compete for immediate playing time.
"Coach Hammerschmidt (University of Arizona) said he thinks I could be a big impact player in their secondary," Benjamin said. "Coach Bray (ASU) called and said that they thought I could be one of the players that comes in during the spring and plays right away."
Benjamin says the ASU defense is just what he is looking for.
"I love their defense," Benjamin said. "They play a lot of man coverage and they make it to a bowl game almost every year. I like the environment of where the school is located and they have a good academic program."
In addition to the aforementioned programs, Benjamin has also had recent contact with Colorado State and Colorado.
