Jesse Grisham: Local Lineman Considering UAB
UAB and five other schools are recruiting Spain Park offensive lineman Jesse Grisham. He'll probably name his choice before the end of summer, but - at least for now - he's keeping all options open.
Grisham is a 6-foot-3, 285-pound offensive tackle at Spain Park who is expected to be a center or guard in college. His size and skills have drawn the attention of at least six schools. Those include Ole Miss, Louisiana-Monroe, South Alabama, Middle Tennessee and Jacksonville State. He has already received offers from South Alabama and Lousiana-Monroe, as well as UAB.
Where will he go? He's not saying. "I'm keeping all my options open," said Grisham. "I have so many choices right now."
Grisham has been heavily recruited by UAB assistant coach Tyson Helton. "I like it that they're highly interested in me," said Grisham. "He [Coach Helton] sends me e-mails and hand-written notes - not typewritten. It shows me that they're really interested in me."
And added factor is that UAB is close to home for the Birmingham-area player. "The campus is right down the road," he noted.
Grisham added that Helton has told him, "If I want to play for [UAB], I'd have a scholarship."
Grisham believes he will be an asset wherever he goes. "I'm dedicated in the weight room and on the field," he said. "I want to the best that I can be."
But he also knows that means learning a new position in college. "I play left tackle in high school, but I'm only 6-3," he said. "Because of my height, I'll be playing center or guard in college."
Still, Grisham is in no hurry to make a decision. He has already visited Alabama, Mississippi State and Middle Tennessee. He planning a visit to UAB in the near future, where Helton will introduce him to offensive line coach Will Friend.
By the end of the summer, he expects to have enough information to make a decision. "I'm hoping to make my decision before football season starts," he said.
UAB is hoping he'll choose to be a Blazer.
