Spartans land Detroit PSL star
Heading into today's camp, Dana Dixon of Detroit Renaissance High School was one of the top uncommitted prospects in Michigan for the class of 2009. With a solid list of offers, including schools like Indiana, Northwestern, Louisville and Minnesota, Dixon was looking to have a strong performance in East Lansing today in order to receive a Spartan offer.
Dixon checked in at 6-foot-3, 175-pounds and blistered his way to three sub 4.5 forty-yard dashes (SpartanMag.com clocked him ourself at 4.47). He also posted an impressive vertical jump (34 inches) and ran one of the best shuttles of the day.
Those numbers improved Dixon's stock, but it was his performance in the 7 v 7 drills that arguably sealed the deal. In taht portion of teh camp, Dixon showed athleticism that can translate to either side of the ball at the next level.
Late this evening SpartanMag.com caught up with Renaissance Coach Antoine Edwards and he confirmed to us that after camp today Dixon was offered a scholarship by Coach Dantonio. He subsequently accepted the opportunity to join the Spartan family and play for Michigan State. Dixon will join teammate and All-Americna Linebacker Chris Norman in East Lansing next fall.
One of the telling comments from Coach Edwards about Dixon's recruitment was the following:
"One thing that impressed us about Michigan State recruitment of Dana was they were always upfront with him. They did not offer him a few months ago simply because he plays with Chris. They told him from day one what he would have to do to earn a scholarship to Michigan State. Dana respected that and today he went out and got the job done."
Dixon is rated a 3-star recruit by Rivals.com and the #69 safety in the nation. Spartanmag.com ranked Dixon the #18 prospect in the state for the class of 2008. Dixon's performance today not only garnered him his Spartan scholarship offer, but improved our impression of him as well.
The big question is what position will Dixon play in college? He shinned today in the 7 on 7 catching a lot of passes from future Spartan QB Andrew Maxwell.
When we scouted Dixon at the Columbus NIKE Camp in May he looked much more comfortable at safety than wide receiver. Either way, the Spartans are getting a versatile athlete.
One of the positives aspect to Dixon recruitment is his size. He measured in at 6-foot-3 1/4 today and weighed 175-pounds. Dixon will certainly need to add some weight to his frame, but his size and speed give him a lot of upside. It also doesn't hurt tha Dixon is a solid student who carries a B average and has scored a 26 on the ACT.
SpartanMag.com will have much more on the newest Spartan tomorrow, including quotes from Dixon himself.
