Mustangs add wide receiver commit
The SMU coaching staff is hot on the recruiting trail picking up numerous commitments over the past few weeks. On Monday, the staff added yet another talented prospect, this time to add to the offensive firepower for which head coach June Jones is so well known. The addition came in the form of Missouri City (Texas) Hightower wide receiver Darius Johnson.
"I committed this morning," Johnson said. "I committed about two hours ago. I called them and told them I would like to commit and the coaches seemed very happy."
A number of factors played into Johnson's decision including both the offense and the coaching staff.
"I like their style of offensive play," he said. "The coaches are cool people. They're nice and they made me feel at home. The campus is very nice and it has great academics. I went to the campus I think two times and it was cool. The players also made me feel very comfortable."
Johnson has known for a long time that he wanted to get his decision out of the way before his senior season and now he can focus on winning a state championship.
"I wanted to do it before the season started," he said. "I was trying to wait on my options but I wanted to commit before the season. I think we're going to be pretty good. I think we should win state. We have the talent and the ability to win state."
Johnson has already attended camps at Baylor, Kansas State and Northwestern but will be spending the rest of the summer working out and getting ready for the fall, when he hopes to earn all-state honors. When he does suit up for the mustangs, he hopes to bring a lot to the table.
"I receive well but I also kick return and punt return so I think I help them on that and that will bring an extra dimension to the team."
