Spartan 2010 target talks about his offers
One of the top football recruits in Michigan for the class of 2010 is linebacker Austin Gray of Warren Fitzgerald High School. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound prospect just picked up his first two scholarship offers. SpartanMag.com caught up with him last night and has the latest on his recruitment.
Warren Fitzgerald High School is having an outstanding season and Gray is one of the big reasons why. The Spartans are off to a 7-0 start and hope to clinch the MAC title this Friday when they play St Clair Shores Lake Shore High School. The turn around the program has made the past few year under Head Coach Jason Byers is impressive.
Gray has not played a lot of full games this fall due to Warren Fitzgerald often getting big leads over the opposition. This past weekend though he played the entire contest versus Madison Heights Madison High School and racked up a season high 15 tackles.
SpartanMag.com, asked Gray about the season.
"It has been great, everyone at school is excited and has been real supportive," Gray said.
You picked up your first two scholarship offers last week, tell us how you that occurred?
"Coach Rod Smith from Michigan was at our school and I had just got done speaking with him. Coach Byers came and told me that he had just got done talking with Coach Spack from Purdue and that they were offering me. So I called Coach Spack up.
What did Coach Spack have to say?
"He said he had no doubt about my athletic ability. He has already seen me in person; I went down there for a 1-day camp this summer. He said he saw my film and was impressed. He stressed academics and taking care of my grades."
No long after Purdue offers, the Toledo Rockets decided to join in the race for Gray's services as well. The Rockets called on the same day as the Boilermakers and also offered Gray a scholarship. The recent flurry of activity is mainly due to teams getting Gray's junior highlight film that was sent out early last week.
Spartanmag.com asked Gray about some of the other teams that he is hearing from on a regular basis.
"I usually speak with Coach Enos or Coach Tressel, he said. I sent them my film, so now I guess I just have to wit to hear back from them. I have been to three games this fall. I think they might come and see me play Friday night. I am not sure, but I think Coach Byers said they might be down."
Michigan: I was down there this weekend to see the Toledo game. They told me they just got my film and have not broke it down yet, but they will be looking at it soon."
Getting your first two scholarship offers had to be a big thrill. What reaction did you get from your family?
"My parents and my brother were really excited. I was walking around on cloud nine, but I think they were even more excited that I was. Getting an offer from Purdue was great because I have two cousins that go there. I also have lots of family that live in Ohio near Toledo."
As far as a time-table, Gray does not seem to be in too much of a hurry. Like many high-level recruits, he would probably like to make a decision prior to his senior year. That would allow him to focus on his football season and take care of all the academic requirements. There is no doubt that Gray will certainly pick up more scholarships as word gets out.
Look for updated highlight film of Gray to be uploaded into the Rivals database in the near future.
