VIDEO: Nix, Appling highlights from PSL Championship
DETROIT - The Detroit Public School League Championship between Pershing and Southeastern featured an impressive collection of talent that included seniors, juniors, and what appears to be a strong sophomore class in the Motor City.
Michigan State coach Tom Izzo was on hand to watch his two Pershing commitments, 2010 combo guard Keith Appling and 2009 center Derrick Nix, guide the Doughboys to their first Detroit Public School League championship in 13 years.
Izzo also got a good look at the next wave of standouts from Detroit in Southeastern's Brandan Kearney, a 6-foot-4 wing from the Class of 2011 as well as emerging big man Percy Gibson who has made a good case by his play of late that he may be the best young big man in Michigan from in a promising sophomore class.
Gibson struggled against Pershing in a 79-58 loss, but the 6-foot-8 2011 standout has done enough good things throughout the course of the year to be a fixture on Michigan State's recruiting radar.
With commitments from Appling and Ft. Wayne sharpshooter Russell Byrd, Juwan Howard Jr. is not a player that Michigan State is targeting for 2010. But Howard did increase his stock with a number of college coaches with his best showing of the season in the PSL Championship. Howard led all scorers with 22 points.
While watching Gibson, Izzo also got a good look at another quality sophomore in Southeastern's Brandan Kearney, who also drew the attentive eye of Michigan head coach John Beilein.
