SEC team joins race for Louisiana DT
Damien Jacobs had a leader on Tuesday.
Of course, that was before he picked up his first Southeastern Conference offer.
By the end of the day Tuesday, Jacobs, a 6-foot-3, 300-pound defensive tackle from Houma (H.L. Bourgeois), La., still had the same leader, but the race for his signature had changed.
"Ole Miss offered yesterday," Jacobs said Wednesday afternoon. "I was excited. It was my first SEC offer. I was real excited about that."
Jacobs now sports offers from Ole Miss, Florida State, Tulsa, Tulane, Louisiana Tech and Florida International.
"Florida State is ahead right now," Jacobs said. "They offered me Friday and they've been recruiting me two weeks now. I feel most comfortable with that coaching staff. They're the front-runners right now."
Jacobs, who is being recruited by Ole Miss safeties coach Kim Dameron, said the Rebels have made a strong first impression.
"When I first met (Dameron), I saw he had a good sense of humor," Jacobs said, adding that he hasn't talked to Florida State coach Bobby Bowden or Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt yet. "I liked that. He's a really cool person."
Jacobs will likely get the chance to visit with those head men and others this summer. He said he's headed to Auburn and Tennessee in the next week, Tulane on June 20, Florida State in July and Ole Miss and Tulsa at still-undetermined times this summer.
Jacobs had 98 tackles _ including 50 behind the line of scrimmage _ and six quarterback sacks as a junior. He also forced three fumbles, recovered three fumbles and broke up a pass.
Jacobs, who said he plans to make his college choice sometime during his senior season, has a 2.3 core grade-point average and a 16 on the ACT.
