Despite no offer, Deering still interested in Bucks
Whenever any football player plays as many positions well as Tampa (Fla.) Leto High School athlete Jeremy Deering does, he is going to grab all sorts of attention from prospective colleges.
Deering, who has seen time at quarterback, running back, receiver, safety, and as a return specialist, is starting to reap the benefits of his versatility and its shown in his list of scholarship offers.
While Deering isn't sure of how many total scholarships he has received to date, the 6-foot-2, 198-pounder has increased his total from around 10 in late April to in the neighborhood of 20 now, including a few recent offers.
"The whole process is turning out to be really good," Deering said. "(Yesterday) I just got an offer from Duke and last week I got one from Florida State. I don't know how many I have, but it is in the ballpark of 20."
His ability to play more than one position has surely helped him in terms of racking off offers from different schools. Deering said coaches are intrigued with his ability to play everywhere on the field.
"The question I get from every coach is asking what position I want to play," Deering said. "They tell me I can play a lot of positions and that makes it easier to get scholarships because some people only get recruited at one position and if that position is full then they don't get an offer. Since I play more than one position, I get more offers because I play a lot of positions."
The junior, who rushed for over 1,000 yards and passed for 853 and 10 touchdowns certainly isn't short of options.
Deering has received offers from a handful of very respected programs, including Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Ole Miss, North Carolina, Oregon State, Purdue, South Carolina, South Florida, Syracuse, West Virginia, Central Florida and others.
While he hasn't yet received offers from every program that is interested, Deering has also heard from Ohio State, Alabama, Michigan State, and Oklahoma.
Even though Deering has yet to pick up an offer from Ohio State, the receiver said he stays in pretty close contact with Buckeye cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson.
"I am not sure about the status of a scholarship, but I want to take a visit out there this summer," Deering said. "I keep in touch with Coach Johnson and he tells me about different information on Ohio State and trying to get to know me, stuff like that."
Despite not yet talking about a possible offer with Johnson, Deering said its possible Johnson spoke with his head coach about it.
"I haven't talked to him about it yet but he talks about that stuff with my coach," Deering said. "My coach sometimes hears stuff that I don't, so it is possible they have talked about it."
Even though the offer hasn't come through, Deering did say he is still very interested in Ohio State and wants to get to know more about the school.
"I am interested in them but I just want to research all the schools," Deering said. "They may offer me later, and that's an option, but I am still going to have to research all the schools and make a list."
Deering said he has yet to make a top five because he is still narrowing down his choices, but Ohio State is a school that he certainly wants to become more familiar with. Deering said a summer trip to Columbus is something he wants to do.
"It is tough to narrow it down," Deering said. "All of them are good schools so you just need to narrow it down by which schools you want the most. I would like to go to Ohio State this summer."
