Mullen linebacker has multiple options
The summer seems to be the calm before the recruiting storm for Denver linebacker/defensive end Nduka Onyeali, who has decided to make some college visits early in the fall in hopes of downsizing his list of colleges from the 10 who have offered scholarships thus far to a more manageable four or five.
At 6-foot-1 and 225 pounds, Onyeali accounted for 105 tackles and 19 sacks playing both defensive end and as a linebacker in Mullen High School's 3-4 defense last year, which helped the Mustangs to a state title.
"Our expectations are to do the same thing we did last year - win state," Onyeali said. "We know it is hard to repeat. We lost two starters on defense and we lost the starting O-line."
Onyeali said his team has been doing some practicing Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and he is working out separately for an hour and a half four days-a-week.
"What I have been doing is working out constantly, trying to get better," he said. "The most improvement is probably my conditioning. It is funny too, because I am 240 (pounds) now."
While the high school season is his focus, Onyeali said he is beginning to set up visits to schools he is close enough to drive to and have offered him scholarships. He said he plans on taking the visits in the last couple weeks before school starts. Thus far he has been offered scholarships by Colorado State, Colorado, Kansas, Kansas State, Arizona State, Minnesota, TCU, UNLV and Tulsa.
"I am just getting to know all the coaches who have offered me a lot better," Onyeali said. "I haven't (pared down his list of schools), but I want to get it narrowed down by the start of the season."
One school Onyeali said he is familiar with is Colorado State, where his recruiting contact is Larry Kerr.
"I like CSU," Onyeali said. "They are a good school and definitely improving. I know some kids who go there. I know Chris (Nwoke) and John Gaye. I also know Ricky Brewer, a linebacker, so. They tell me nothing but good things. I just talked to Chris. He is loving it."
