Weekend spawns first commitment
Palm Bay (Fla.) Bayside defensive back Deon Broomfield told CycloneReport.com last night that he was strongly considering a verbal commitment to Iowa State. Less than 24 hours later the deed was done as Broomfield committed to ISU Monday afternoon.
The 6-foot-0, 170-pound two-star safety prospect chose Iowa State over offers from Florida Atlantic and Florida International and interest from Louisville. He officially visited ISU this past weekend and saw all he needed to see of the Cyclone football program and the university itself. After talking with family and sleeping on the decision, he was ready to make the call.
"I did it right after football practice today," Broomfield said of making the phone call to commit to Iowa State. "It was on my mind all the way home last night after the visit. I talked to my parents last night and they said it was up to me. My mom said that I had their approval if that's what I wanted to do."
Broomfield said he spoke with four Iowa State coaches on Monday, including his recruiting coach - Scott Fountain - and head coach Gene Chizik. Broomfield summarized his conversation with Coach Chizik on Monday.
Iowa State projects Broomfield as a safety, the position he plays for Bayside. Broomfield has 48 tackles, three forced fumbles and two interceptions so far this season.
