CINCINNATI, Ohio - Thirty-eight players from 14 different states highlight the first announcement of players chosen for the 11th Annual Team One National Showcase.
"We are very pleased to announce the first group of players who have been chosen for the Team One National and have accepted invitations," said Team One President Jeff Spelman. "Our first focus was getting the top prospects from our four summer Showcases."
Thirty four players announced today competed at a Team One event this summer. Four others were at-large selections. The remaining players - about 12-15 more - will be announced September 4th on the TeamOneBaseball.com website.
"There's a lot of depth among the pitchers and infielders in our group of players who were at Team One this summer," Spelman said. "With our first four at-large spots we focused on getting a very projectable left-handed pitcher in John Danks from Round Rock, Texas. The next three spots went to guys who can really swing the bat well - David Winfree, Jonathan Still and Jordan Mayer. Winfree has already committed to Clemson and Mayer to LSU.
"The final group of prospects will be an extremely talented group that will include some likely first-rounders," Spelman said. "We will be focusing primarily on adding more pitching and outfielders plus several other players. The remaining spots will go to a combination of at-large prospects and some other top prospect who were at Team One this summer."
Top Football/Baseball Stars Coming
Included in this group are several talented prospects who are being recruited heavily in both football and baseball.
Florida outfielder Alex Boston, who's being recruited by Miami, Florida, Florida State and many others in both sports, and Arkansas catcher Landon Leach, the state player of the year in both sports last year, will both take time out of their football season to spend two days in Las Vegas at the Team One National.
"It's a great example of their committment to baseball and just how meaningful the Team One National is to players," Spelman said. "Both of those guys will play football on a Friday night, fly to Las Vegas, and then compete among the nation's elite players the following two days."
Also included in today's 38 announced players are the number one prospects from each of the four Team One Showcases this summer (Jim Rapoport, Robert Valido, Asher Demme and Dan Richardson).
So far, the state of Florida leads the way with 14 selections followed by California with eight. Virginia and Texas both have three players from the initial 38 selections.
