Here are the sixth Rivals.com 1-120 rankings of the season.
There are numerous variables at play, chief among them who a team has beaten and where. But while we have a "what have you done for me lately?" mind-set, we consider the rankings a snapshot of the whole season, not just one week; that's why - at times - teams are ranked below a team they may have beaten.
We update these every Tuesday at 1:20 p.m. Eastern time, so if your team isn't where you think it should be, check back in a week.
1. LSU (9-0)
BUZZ: Who woulda thunk it: Les Miles goes by the book and in doing so outcoaches Nick Saban. Now LSU can focus on what it needs to do to beat Arkansas on Nov. 25.
NEXT GAME: Saturday vs. Western Kentucky
2. Oklahoma State (9-0)
BUZZ: The Cowboys' offense is national-title worthy. Their defense? Hey, it's good enough to win a Pop Warner title.
NEXT GAME: Saturday at Texas Tech
3. Stanford (9-0)
BUZZ: Deep down, you have to think Stanford's players would be more confident about Saturday's outcome if Jim Harbaugh still were coach.
NEXT GAME: Saturday vs. Oregon
4. Alabama (8-1)
BUZZ: The Tide's defense did its job in the "Game of the Century." But the offense didn't, and the special teams played a big role in the Tide falling.
NEXT GAME: Saturday at Mississippi State
5. Boise State (8-0)
BUZZ: The Broncos need a lot of things to happen to have a shot at playing for the national title. Alas, all those things are not going to happen.
NEXT GAME: Saturday vs. TCU
6. Oregon (8-1)
BUZZ: The Ducks will have a lot of extra fans this week when they travel to "The Farm" this weekend. It would help their cause if QB Darron Thomas reverts to early-October form.
NEXT GAME: Saturday at Stanford
7. Oklahoma (8-1)
BUZZ: The fabulous career of stud WR Ryan Broyles came to a sad end Saturday. But at least he leaves with the NCAA career receptions mark.
NEXT GAME: Nov. 19 at Baylor
8. Clemson (8-1)
BUZZ: Clemson can clinch the ACC's Atlantic Division race title with a victory over the Demon Deacons, and you have to think the Tigers will be paying attention Thursday night when Coastal challengers Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech go at it.
NEXT GAME: Saturday vs. Wake Forest
9. Virginia Tech (8-1)
BUZZ: The Hokies can bury Georgia Tech in the ACC Coastal Division race with a victory Thursday night. But the Hokies' run defense better be ready.
NEXT GAME: Thursday at Georgia Tech
10. Arkansas (8-1)
BUZZ: Arkansas should be 10-1 when it plays at LSU on Nov. 25. And remember that the Hogs have won three of their past four meetings with the Tigers.
NEXT GAME: Saturday vs. Tennessee
11. Penn State (8-1)
BUZZ: Saturday's game is big in terms of the Big Ten race. But the on-field aspect of the program is vastly overshadowed by the nauseating Jerry Sandusky case. Saturday's game is the last home contest of the season for the Nittany Lions, and more than a few observers think it will be the last home game of Joe Paterno's career, too.
NEXT GAME: Saturday vs. Nebraska
12. Michigan State (7-2)
BUZZ: The Spartans still are in control in the Big Ten's Legends Division, and they basically can eliminate Iowa from the mix with a victory Saturday.
NEXT GAME: Saturday at Iowa
13. Wisconsin (7-2)
BUZZ: "Paul Bunyan's Axe" is up for grabs Saturday when the Badgers meet the Golden Gophers. (Man, you have to give it up to the Big Ten when it comes to trophy games. Theirs are the best.)
NEXT GAME: Saturday at Minnesota
14. South Carolina (7-2)
BUZZ: South Carolina has lost its edge in the SEC East race. The Gamecocks need to beat the Gators and have Georgia lose to either Auburn (possible) or Kentucky (there's more of a chance that Lou Holtz returns to coach the Gamecocks).
NEXT GAME: Saturday vs. Florida
15. Houston (9-0)
BUZZ: The last time the Cougars played on a Thursday night, Case Keenum threw nine TD passes. What will he do for an encore?
NEXT GAME: Thursday at Tulane
16. USC (7-2)
BUZZ: While USC can't officially win the Pac-12 South title, the Trojans can win it unofficially, which makes Saturday's game important. Plus, there's the nice Lane Kiffin-Steve Sarkisian sub-plot, too.
NEXT GAME: Saturday vs. Washington
17. Nebraska (7-2)
BUZZ: Northwestern?!?! Man, that's not a good loss. Still, the Huskers have a legit shot at the Big Ten Legends Division title, assuming they win out.
NEXT GAME: Saturday at Penn State
18. Texas (6-2)
BUZZ: The Longhorns close with four tough games, and three of those are on the road, including a matchup with a Mizzou team desperately needing a win in an attempt to become bowl-eligible.
NEXT GAME: Saturday at Missouri
19. Kansas State (7-2)
BUZZ: Whew - the Oklahoma/Oklahoma State double is done. Now K-State's secondary can relax, right? Uhh, no.
NEXT GAME: Saturday vs. Texas A&M
20. Georgia Tech (7-2)
BUZZ: If the Yellow Jackets want to win the ACC's Coastal Division, they have to win Thursday night against the league's other Tech.
NEXT GAME: Thursday vs. Virginia Tech
21. TCU (7-2)
BUZZ: The Horned Frogs' secondary has been shredded in TCU's two losses. That bodes ill with Kellen Moore ready to take aim and fire.
NEXT GAME: Saturday at Boise State
22. Georgia (7-2)
BUZZ: Well, what do you know? Mark Richt could go from sitting on the hot seat to sitting on the SEC East throne. And that would mean a contract extension, right?
NEXT GAME: Saturday vs. Auburn
23. Michigan (7-2)
BUZZ: The square peg-round hole aspect of Denard Robinson trying to play in more of a West Coast-style attack has come through load and clear in the past three games. In the past three games, he has rushed for a total of 160 yards and thrown for a combined 487. That's a total-offense average of just 215.6 yards per game.
NEXT GAME: Saturday at Illinois
24. Arizona State (6-3)
BUZZ: It all looked so easy - beat UCLA and basically wrap up the Pac-12 South title. Alas, losing to the Bruins wasn't in the plans. The Sun Devils' defense needs to 'bow up.
NEXT GAME: Saturday at Washington State
25. Ohio State (6-3)
BUZZ: The Buckeyes are finishing up their two-game stretch against the Big Ten's Indiana-based schools (a win over IU last week and a game against Purdue this week). In Big Ten parlance, that's known as "two sure wins."
NEXT GAME: Saturday at Purdue
26. Notre Dame (6-3)
NEXT GAME: Saturday vs. Maryland in Landover, Md.
