Lakeland (Fla.) High School could have as many as 11 Division I prospects in its class of 2007. One such player is wide receiver Paul Wilson, who has two scholarship offers to his credit, and could be close to landing more.
"I have offers from West Virginia, Marshall and Florida International," the 6-foot-1, 177-pound Wilson said. "Some of my other top schools are Notre Dame, South Carolina, Georgia, LSU and Alabama."
Wilson, who runs the 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds, likes what the South Carolina Gamecocks have to offer.
"When you say South Carolina, the first thing you think of now is Steve Spurrier," Wilson said. "He's turning that program around, and he throws the ball around to his wide receivers a lot. As a receiver, you got to love that."
The Fighting Irish also rate highly for Wilson, who sports a 35-inch vertical leap.
"Notre Dame has a lot of tradition. Coach (Charlie) Weis won this year without his own players, so you can imagine what he'll do once the team is completely his. He's like an offensive genius to me."
Wilson also shared his thoughts on West Virginia.
"They held a coaching clinic down here at my high school, and that's when they offered me. I like their offense, and how they use their wide receivers."
Georgia rounds out the list of teams Wilson commented on.
"My dad (Mark Wilson) played at Georgia from 1973-1976, so I grew up a Bulldog. They have a lot to offer as a program."
Wilson, who bench presses 265 pounds, believes he brings several things to the table as a player.
"I pride myself on how hard I work, but my hands are probably my biggest strength. I expect to catch everything I touch, and I'm pretty hard on myself when I don't make a catch I think I should. I also play with some great running backs, so I've gotten the chance to do a lot of downfield blocking. I've gotten pretty good at that, too."
Wilson plans to take his time in determining which school is best for him.
"I plan to take all of my official visits before deciding. I'm a baseball guy, too, and I should get drafted, so that's a part of the process, too. My top five schools in order as of today are Notre Dame, South Carolina, West Virginia, Georgia and Alabama."
